YANG ON A MINUTE!!September 4th, 2009

You would have had to have been on another planet not to know who TaylorMade Staff player YE Yang is. Well, you know he is the 2009 PGA Champion, but let’s look a little deeper.A relative late-starter, South Korean Yang Yoong-eun took up the game at 19, while working at a driving range in his home town. After a stint in the army, he then moved to New Zealand where he turned professional and then ventured onto the Asian and Japanese Tours.
His big break came in 2006 when he qualified to play in the HSBC Champions tournament and promptly beat Tiger Woods into second place, gaining his European Tour card in the process. From there it was off to the PGA Tour, where he gained his card through the ultra-tough Qualifying School. In his 46th career start on the PGA Tour, he won the 2009 Honda Classic, beating another star-studded field, which included defending champion Ernie Els.
And in August, he added to his PGA Tour career tally by going one better than fellow Asians TC Chen (2nd 1985 US Open), Isao Aoki (2nd 1980 US Open) and Lu Liang-Huan (2nd 1971 Open Championship) by winning the final Major of the year.
Look out for YE Yang taking on Tiger again at The Presidents Cup in October – he is going to be a popular addition to the International team that’s looking for its first victory on US soil…
